Spotify Listening History Comes to MusicTrends

Spotify Listening History Comes to MusicTrends
Depiction of Spotify integration with MusicTrends

Spotify users can now bring their listening history into MusicTrends.net.

MusicTrends now supports importing Spotify's Extended Streaming History, giving you a way to analyze years of past listening without needing to have used Last.fm or ListenBrainz the whole time.

Once imported, MusicTrends can use that history to explore the same kinds of questions it already helps answer:

  • When did you first discover an artist?
  • How has your listening changed over time?
  • Which artists or albums defined a particular year?
  • What release years and decades dominate your listening?
  • Which old favorites disappeared, and which ones came back?

How it works

Spotify allows you to request an export of your Extended Streaming History.

Once you have that export, you can upload it to MusicTrends and the import will run in the background.

Depending on how much history you have, processing may take some time, but once it's complete your Spotify listening history becomes part of the same analysis MusicTrends already provides for other listening sources.

One important limitation

The Spotify import is a point-in-time snapshot.

MusicTrends does not currently maintain a live connection to Spotify, so new listens will not automatically appear after the import.

If you want to keep your history current, you have two options:

  1. Re-import your Spotify history periodically.
  2. Connect Spotify to ListenBrainz and use that for ongoing listening updates.

I recommend the second option.

ListenBrainz can automatically track your Spotify listening going forward, while the Spotify import gives you the historical backfill.

That gives you the best of both worlds: years of history to start with, plus ongoing updates from that point forward.

Why this matters

Until now, MusicTrends worked best for people who were already tracking their listening through Last.fm or ListenBrainz.

Spotify import opens the door to a much wider group of people who already have years of listening history, but may never have used a dedicated scrobbling service.

If that sounds like you, you can try it now at:

And if you want to keep your future Spotify listening synced automatically, I strongly recommend checking out:
